Erodium cicutarium has pinnatifid or pinnately compound leaves with sessile, or nearly sessile, leaflets. So they're attached directly to the rachis, or midrib, of the leaf.
This family is recognized by its bisexual flowers in sets of 5 -- 5 petals; 5 sepals; 5-parted stigma; 5, 10, or 15 stamens. They’re common houseplants & some varieties have been bred to have multiple layers of petals.
This #FamilyoftheWeek will cover the Geraniaceae (geranium family). There are 5-11 genera and >700 species in this family worldwide, w/ most in temperate or tropical zones. Tennessee has 2 genera & 8 species.

We have 4 species of Philadelphus in #Tennessee. Philadelphus hirsutus (Cumberland mock orange) is the only one w/ exposed axillary buds above the base of the petiole & the current year’s twigs are pubescent.

The rest of the Hydrangeaceae we’ll cover are shrubs w/ pubescent leaves & twigs. The genus Hydrangea may have lobed or unlobed leaves, but w/ simple pubescence (unbranched hairs). Inflorescences are large w/ 25 or more flowers.
Picea abies (Norway spruce) is a non-native spruce that is not currently known to be naturalized in TN, but has been found growing on the North Carolina side of @GreatSmokyNPS. 5/5
Needles that are 4-angled in cross-section & not clustered in groups w/ basal sheaths belong to the genus Picea (spruce). Check out the adorable bisaccate pollen this family also boasts. 3/5
