A Swiss chocolate trading card sold in 1895, depicting a plesiosaur with a forked tongue and rather turtle-esque back scales.
Ichthyosaur/mosasaur VS Plesiosaur: the oldest paleoart meme?
As far as I can tell this scene first appeared in Jules Verne's 1864 novel Journey to the Center of the Earth.
It seems the strong influence that fiction has on the depiction of extinct reptiles is nothing new.
So I have a new hobby, and that’s watching mid-tier 2000s dinosaur movies.
I’ve watched Journey to the Center of the Earth and Dinosaur Island, and I’m trying to find more. Any suggestions?
The only other one that comes to mind is Will Ferrel’s Land of the Lost.
I love this vintage drawing of Stegosaurus by Alice B. Woodward. While it doesn't align much with modern reconstructions, the obvious lizard influence makes it look almost dragon-like.
From "Evolution in the Past" by Henry R. Knipe, 1912
One of my favourite paleoart tropes has to be dinosaurs/extinct animals with markings resembling the flags of the places they were discovered in. It’s kitschy, but I love kitsch.
If you know of any other examples, feel free to share them below

Apparently women did not make paleoart before the 2000s because I got *no* replies on this.
I have since discovered the work of Ely Kish, but besides that I’m still struggling to learn about any female paleoartists from the pre-internet age. I’m open to book recommendations. https://t.co/noAPpl2D0b
