So, I am learning through this practice. Getting more comfortable with seeing form and trying to render it. Grayscale helps a ton. Execution lacks a ton where I lack experience - especially in later steps with layer modes.
Gonna try highlights in grayscale too, next.

Then, selecting the Pattern Stamp tool, click the drop down box at the top of the screen and choose your new pattern source. Make sure "impressionist" mode is selected to avoid recreating the whole image when you paint. Results with a soft round and a painterly brush shown.
