And is all the more poignant when you consider that in one of the tie-in comics, the Fam meets Ten and Martha stranded in 1969, and Thirteen repeatedly calls him (herself? himself?) a twat for treating Martha like he did. She's learned and grown.

Let's not forget the yuri/shoujo ai girlxgirl romances (lesbians became 'cousins' in the English anime release); plus characters like Haruka and Sapphire who can be considered gender fluid/non binary/genderqueer masc. If only actual gay rights were better in Japan!
