This crazy old bastard from Vinland Saga: Askeladd. A guy who starts off as a rather basic, detestable villain who winds up having more layers to his character than you could possibly foresee just based off his entrance to the story.
An old school favorite of mine - Silver.
Not only the first rival to really nail having a character arc, but one who went on to inspire a carbon copy for the anime: Paul, who turned the Sinnoh saga into something actually interesting.
