I hope this was neat to think about if yr a character artist! I can honestly go through my instagram and pretty easily classify my art into these types.
Oh and studies could be a 'minor' type as well! They could fit anywhere on the scale. Maybe I should say 'unscaled' or smth
Scene- The focus of the work is on the event/moment, interaction w/ the space and sometimes with props. There is some overlap with portraiture, but scenes are a bit more candid + in cases where eyes are turned towards the viewer, there is interaction. You become part of the scene
Portrait- The focus of the work is on the mood of a character. Unlike a showcase, I'm free to cover designs up, and to show the backs of heads. Unlike a scene though, the subject is Typically unfocused or focused on the viewer, or another character.
Most of my art is portraiture.
Design Showcase- The focus of the work is the design of a character, outfit, (and even a prop) and the subject is carefully posed around concealing fairly little of it. I like to have personality come through, but it is not necessary for something to be a showcase.
Inanimate- This encompasses still life and landscapes, empty scenes. If living creatures are there they are NOT the focus, but hidden background easter eggs or part of the landscape.
I call this one of /my/ 2 minor categories because I personally do them rarely.
