In days of old I used to pre-generate a bunch of black and white "transition" gifs and use them as Luma-mattes in after effects but then I programmed my own "PixStipple" plugin for After Effects to totally streamline the process and even make it better

Also here's PixMap which will let you live-retexture stuff within Adobe After Effects using a 3d software's UV pass.
