Honestly I’ve been so starved for character designs like these in Japanese RPGs:
I also played the Taiko no Tatsujin demo and it was very fun. I’d consider getting the game, but it feels like higher difficulty levels are very hard to do on the controller, so I’ll pass for now. Maybe I’ll get it together with the drum controllers later.
I’ve played 1.5 hours of Darkest Dungeon on PS4, but the interface and controls are so convoluted that I don’t feel compelled to continue. This game is definitely not good at presenting its complexity in an accessible way.
Oriental Blue: The best GBA RPG you've never played. Take Romancing SaGa's non-linear story, but in an Asian setting with lots of mysticism and a huge amount of content.
I enjoyed almost all of them, but my favorites are:
Slay the Spire (deck-building roguelike)
Lydia (narrative)
Florence (narrative/point&clock)
Katana Zero (action-platformer)
An honorable mention goes to Moonlighter.

Another week, another cheap Kemco RPG. Unlike Dragon Sinker, though, this one doesn't have a whole lot going for it.
It's funny that the English version goes for an anime-style design while the Japanese version is more reminiscent of classic European children's books.
The first Kiki's Delivery Service book has been retranslated and republished in English as of yesterday. It's a lovely children's book (quite different from the Ghibli movie) and I hope it's more successful in English markets this time.
I also love the grainy textures & how instead of using soft gradients, they went for a "rough" transition from light to shadow.
