Before STAN DRAKE became a famed comic strip artist he had a stint as an illustrator.
He was also with Flash Gordon artist, Alex Raymond, when he was killed in an automobile accident in 1956.

N.C. WYETH's influence is undeniable. I think one of the reasons is because his work had broad appeal. The unsophisticated simplicity of his figures and strong compositions do much to pull the viewer into the story.
Here's a few rarities.

You will regret Googling DICK STONE.
But as an illustrator, he was one solid dude. 😃
I like how he moved in between styles and mediums.
I know...it's Friday, I have my drink on.

EARL OLIVER HURST captured fun, playful energy in simple line and watercolor. And for whatever reason was able to convey a lot of movement.
But most animators already know this. 🧐

Comics would be a very different animal if it wasn't for NOEL SICKLES.
His influence on Milton Caniff and Alex Toth not withstanding.
He always captured the essence of the essential.

Speaking of well-rendered cartoons...JACK COLE, the creator of PLASTIC MAN was also a prolific men's magazine cartoonist.
I really dig his watercolors.
