For the painting, I used a similar approach to how I painted Chain to Memory: lots of big, messy, sharp strokes and a ton of texture to represent his distorted anguish. I always try to empathise with my characters and this one was hard for that reason. He's having a bad time 💀
Anyway, Cynthia approved of that change, but we also decided to experiment with the magical effect on the chains, hence these variations.
Ultimately we liked the green the most, it felt otherworldly and eye-catching.
So I made sure it looked like he wasn't hating the experience TOO much.
Cynthia's brief called for a human priest wrapped in heavy, iron chains covered in spikes. He's being held in this agonising torment for eternity. Big Hellraiser energy.
Initially I went more realistic with the chains, less magical, but we wanted to tone it back a little...
