Berberian Sound Studio: dripping with atmosphere but left me waiting for a revelation / twist that didn’t arrive. 7/10
Lemora: A Childs Tale of the Supernatural. More art house than exploitation this creepy little fantasy transcends its low budget to create something satisfyingly odd. 7.5/10.
The Love Witch: stilted, art directed to distraction and the plot doesn’t earn its 2 hour running time. Yes somehow it won me over. So singular and clearly a real labour of love. Heavily flawed but weirdly, something approaching a triumph on its own terms. 7/10
Don’t Take it to Heart: I’m a sucker for ghost films of the 40’s. This isn’t one of the very best but is still fun. 7/10.
Book: Boy in Darkness by Mervyn Peake. A novella of brilliance that is different to but nearly the equal of the Gormenghast books. 7.5
Belle de Jour: Candy-coloured, 60’s, French (very French), daydreaming brilliance 8 / 10
Illustrations by Patricia Coombs for Dorrie the Little Witch created a real, magical world. Influenced my taste ever since #favekidsbookart
The Witch Who Came From the Sea: 7.5. A one-of-a-kind film. Psychotic, 70’s, revenge fantasy but much, much more interesting than it sounds.
