every bit on THE BLACK DEPTHS plays so well with my working reading of VE as an expression of life in American culture since 9/11 (The Renaissance). The Depths are an excellent analogue for the miserable, irreconcilable shift that took place in our cultural landscape since then.

i know i have the benefit of hindsight etc etc but it's amazing that anyone could see these four panels even w/o text & not come to the conclusion that vriska's apocalyptic desires are concentrated on her mom & by extension the broader elements of alternia tht make her miserable
