'Still life.' (1942) This coming January, to mark its 25th anniversary, the Estorick Collection is presenting an exhibition of work by Giorgio Morandi and will include oil paintings, watercolours and prints. The show runs from 6th January until 30th April 2023.

'Figures from a Play.' (c1960) The fluidity of watercolour allowed Edward Burra to produce a velvet-smooth finish to his work - all the more remarkable given the way he was obliged to hold (really to jam) a paintbrush into his arthritic hand.

Delores.' (c1920) The influence of the Italian Renaissance, in particular the work of Piero della Francesca can often be seen in Gerald Brockhurst's portraits. Set in idealised landscapes, the sitter appears to float in the front of the picture plane.

Edvard Munch was 18 and a student at the Royal Schopl of Drawing in Oslo when he completed this self portrait in 1882, the first of many hundreds. An almost ideally handsome young man at first and a decade on, long-boned, twitchy and in his late 50s looking consumed by life.

William Blake's painting derives from 'A Midsummer Night’s Dream.' Oberon is angry with Titania for refusing to relinquish one of her attendants and has sprinkled her eyes with a potion that will cause her to fall in love with the first living creature she sees when she awakes.

'Gas Alert.' (1919) William Roberts spent two years fighting in France during WW1, first at Vimy Ridge, then Arras and Ypres. Here, he depicts a group of British soldiers; the title an ominous reminder of the impending threat they constantly faced.
