The 2nd of a planned 5 Pioneer solar probes is launched OTD in 1966. Pioneer 7 (B) gathered solar data in support of the Apollo program, studied Halley's Comet in 1986 from 12.3 million km & was last tracked in March 1995 when one of the science instruments was still functioning.
OTD in 1953 NACA research pilot Scott Crossfield made aviation history flying the Douglas Skyrocket D-558-2 (Bureau No. 37974 – NACA 144) #2 aircraft to Mach 2.005, 1,291 miles per hour (2,078 km/h). This was the only Mach 2 flight of the programme.
OTD in 1990 the STS-41 stack (Discovery OV-103/ET-39/SRB BI-040), carrying the Ulysses solar probe & its IUS (#17)/PAM-S upper stages, moved from VAB HB-3 to LC-39B at KSC. At the time STS-35/Columbia (Astro 1) was on Pad 39A, the 1st time both pads were occupied by STS stacks.
OTD in 1972 the proposed Skylab (SL-R) Rescue mission concept became a definite NASA commitment. Now considered a separate mission within the programme, a 2-man CSM would dock at the second alternative docking port & return with the stranded Skylab crew in a 5-person CM recovery.
