PLAYING ROSSUM
Sentient ETs may be hard to recognize
Likewise AI might elude our eyes
It could be there on your screen
If it wished to stay unseen
Say AIs don't mimic our intellect
They would not be easy to detect
Machine minds playing possum
Waiting till we can't oppose them
Max and Brit toured the alien aqueduct
Built by a race now long extinct
They were suffering marital trouble
Were engaged in a petty squabble
Oblivious to the awesome grandeur
Of the exquisite architecture
Also they totally failed to see
The lurking beast that ate them gruesomely
THE WAR OF THE WORLDS by H. G. Wells-Not exactly horror, but it does have a Halloween tradition. A gripping narrative full of ideas. Wells's prose is precise but descriptive, economical but almost poetic. The pace is fast, the action harrowing. This is still an excellent read.
