You both creep to the far door. The handle is rusty but a sharp turn opens it. The door swings.
Inside is a playground - your playground.
You grew up playing on it. You know this to be true, even now in its deformed and grotesque shape.
You follow her into the hallway. She beams excitedly when she sees you, and gestures grandly to the doors.
Her movements are lively yet oddly stiff, her body bending wrong.
“Pick a door, either one should do.”
Disappointment flickers across the girls face at your lack of recognition.
The air is sullen.
After a moment of tense silence, her face brightens and she leaps off the bed.
“Follow me! I know what might jog your memory.”
The strange girl skips into the hallway.
You whisper a quiet greeting to the darkness.
Immediately, hands scrabble at the edge of the quilt as they pull themselves onto the bed.
Up close you can see the waxy face of a girl your age. Her clothing is outdated and her eyes are bright.
She asks,
“Do you remember me?”
“Who am I? I’m Nana. I’m here to protect you.”
Firelight flickers across her face as she continues to stare.
“Go back to sleep.”
Inexplicably your eyelids droop and your head lolls to the side. Your vision blurs and you don’t feel your head hit the floor.
