Years back I annotated some @britishmuseum medieval badges. Yesterday I chanced upon the image again.

This day-to-day language of signs, this old universe of mermaids, dogs, kings & martyrs, is just too fascinating.

According to a medieval legend, Veronica wiped the sweat from Christ’s face as he walked the road to Calvary. His likeness was imprinted onto the cloth and depictions of it were called the ‘Vernicle’. The name Veronica plays on the Latin for ‘True Image’ (vera icon).

I once came across a box in the archives of the British Library filled with the writings of an author called Phyllis Bottome. I think that’s what Phyllis, mistress of Phillip II of Macedon, was told to do to Aristotle when she posed for this aquamanile.
