I love this little spicyboy

This is apparently as close as they could get to a Rat. A lot of the justification comes from the Pokedex calling it a "Fire Mouse Pokémon".

The Pokedex broadly defines other small mammal Pokémon,including Sandshrew, as 'Mouse' or '____ Mouse' Pokémon in Gen 1 and 2.

This wasn't designed to look like a loong, or Chinese dragon. At best, Charizard is influenced by western dragons.

Gen 1 wouldn't have been designed with any long-running theme, though, because it wasn't planned with sequels. It was stand-alone project.

Someone DM'd me once just to say "You're an idiot" because they'd read an 8 year old comment I made about how the Pokémon fire starter/zodiac theory wasn't real.

"Wow, those prints are cool but I want something ORIGINAL!"

But within canon, yes. Nanimon is said to come "from another dimension" where it was known as OYAJI and raised as a digital pet. Oyajitchi was an adult character in the original Tamagotchi.
