Artpedia Gallery is delighted to present Distinct Vernaculars, a group exhibition of works by Amarachi Odimba, Fredrick Idele, Olalekan Adeyemi, Dennis Onofua and Sadiq Williams. Featuring narratives that are peculiar to the artists.

By 1961, when older members of the society were graduating, the group disbanded and in a few years the other members graduated too. They all soon began to function in different capacities as lecturers, industrial designers, graphic artists, and art critics.

In its early days, the Fine Arts department at the College of Arts, Science and Technology, Zaria, had only British lecturers bar Clara Ugbodaga, a Nigerian painter. This, alongside the use of the British curriculum, meant that the students studied European art majorly.

In line with his interest in art, Grillo obtained a diploma in Fine Arts from the Nigeria College of Art, Science, and Technology, Zaria (now Ahmadu Bello University) in 1961.

Emokpae was born in 1934 in Benin where he also had his basic and high school education. He went on to study art at Yaba College of Technology before proceeding to England to further his education.

His early days as an artist saw him win several art competitions, including first prize in the Sun ray Club Art competition in 1949 and the Elder Dumpster Lines Silver Cup for the best painting at the All Nigeria Festival of Art in 1952.

It was at NCAST that Clara taught some of the artists who would go on to become some of Nigeria's and Africa's foremost artists of the 20th and 21st Centuries.

Her students included, Uche Okeke, Bruce Onobrakpeya, Demand Nwoko and Yusuf Grillo.
