Step#1: Draw your favorite character(s)
Step#2: Paint them but without using a reference, do it by memory.
Step#3: Compare them side by side with the originals and see how close you came to getting the colors right.

Thanks to Lumity's fanfics I feel that brown is the most beautiful eye color in all of existence. You writers really have a natural talent for pulling out all the synonyms and poetic metaphors as far as brown eyes are concerned, wow.
