If a lady holds a fan from her right hand, it can be said that she's looking for a suitor. If her left, she's declaring that she already has one.
During the Spanish era, conservatism and "purity" of a woman was highly regarded. This lead to interactions between young men and women (w/o a chaperone) to be limited.
But love finds its way. Lovers would find ingenious ways of sending messages without prying eyes.
