Chilean blue whales dive deeper during the day but not at night, because the food they eat is up near the surface at night. At night they are consistently <12 m depth, which is shallow enough for ships to hit them and kill them.

@sergiperezjorge Yes, here is the separation for E and W populations in the North Pacific, based on call types. I don't think the N Atlantic is considered to be more than one population though, as far as I know.
