As part of our renewal of our logos, you may see this young lady appearing more often. She is part of our coat of arms, and we have named her Clara, for clarity. She represents the pillars of the Birmingham and Midland Institute, Science, Literature and Art.

Sir David Willcocks, our 130th President in 1983, is renowned for setting numerous carols, and locally as organist at Worcester Cathedral and conductor of City of Birmingham Choir.

Before that, he showed his bravery in Normandy in July 1944, being awarded the Military Cross.

This Christmas carol "It came Upon a Midnight Clear" is sung to the tune "Noel", which wad adapted from an English melody in 1874 by Arthur Sullivan.

Sullivan was knighted in 1883 and in 1888 became or 35th President.

Historically, mince pies were a status symbol at Xmas. The wealthy liked to show off at their Christmas parties by having pies made is different shapes. Having pies like this meant you were rich and could afford to employ the best most expensive pastry cooks.

Germany is credited with starting the Xmas tree tradition in the C16th when Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. It is believed that Martin Luther, the C16th Protestant reformer added lighted candles to a tree.

Its an exciting day today here at the BMI, as we have started work on The Sir Arthur Sullivan Hall. This will be a wonderful ground floor space with capacity for up to 70 people. Watch this space for more updates and picture as the project progresses.

The Star of Bethlehem, by Birmingham born artist Edward Burne-Jones. Dated 1882-1883.
Depicts the Nativity Scene, with Mary, Joseph the infant Christ, the 3 kings and the angel holding the Star.
