I think easily google-able images like these are meant to be seen as proof that individual artists are at fault for these variations. When in fact, these are great tools that reveal core physical traits of the characters. What remains constant, and what can be played around with.
Widely used layout trick, because it works. The lightest spot is where your eye wants to go, and that's where the characters are intended to go.
The background anticipates the characters.
