This fascinating early work by William Turner of Oxford (1789-1862) depicts his local church of Shipton on Cherwell, a few miles north of Oxford. Drawn when he was only 19 (it’s signed and dated on the gravestone), this watercolour was one of his first exhibits at the OWS in 1808

This delicate drawing by John Constable (1776-1837) probably depicts his wife Maria in the early 1820s. She was the love of Constable’s life and they had seven children together. He was heartbroken when she died of tuberculosis in 1828.

Delighted that these two oil sketches of the Bristol Riots by James Baker Pyne are going to a good home. After the voting down of the second Reform Bill in October 1831, Bristol was consumed by three days of protests and riots. Exhibition of Bristol School continues until 6 Oct

Much of my current exhibition is of landscapes but this is an exception. It is a study for the right hand of George Stanhope, 6th Earl of Chesterfield (1805-1866) by James Ward, R.A. for his large painting ‘Lord Stanhope riding a Pony’ now in Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery
