After Milana, though, it's different. He wouldn't admit it, but he figures he already "tried" romance and it "didn't work". No point trying anymore. He still hits on people (he has a reputation to keep up) but doesn't expect it to go anywhere + isn't willing to try beyond that.
Someone asked if Hyden gives good back rubs. That depends, are we talking younger Hyden or old washed up lazy Hyden? For younger Hyden, romance and intimacy was novel and new. Because it was new and interesting, he was willing to put in (some) effort (sometimes).
The ads I get at work are certain that I'm a grumpy old man who likes barbecuing and playing with power tools. That could be less wrong. Anyway I drew Hyden in one of the shirts they keep trying to advertise me. (He would never actually wear a t-shirt, but the sentiment applies.)
As a kid, his immune system was much worse. Frail health+being his family's only heir made him too valuable to expose to unnecessary illness or injury, so he had to stay inside alone & miss out on games, fencing, & horse riding lessons. (He didn't mind much, he was always a nerd)

Worse, a cold or flu can linger in his system at a low level for weeks. He makes sure that everyone around him shares his misery, of course, by being even more sour and whiny than usual.

The south rim of the continent hasn't completely iced over. Northcrest is declining for other reasons, though, namely the death of town witch Baroness North. Her son is a poor replacement.
