For me, it doesn't get much better than Jorge Zaffino, Moebius, Sienkiewicz, and Frazetta. All great sequential artists and illustrators.
Just found out Victor Hugo was also an artist. In his exile from Paris he created around 4,000 drawings. Lots of beautiful inkwash, charcoal, and coffee used in his work. Disney animation artists studied a lot of it while working on Hunchback of Notre Dame.
