1917 the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) was founded. Here some WAAC women are on telephone line maintenance & repair in Scotland in 1917, though many served as telephone operators supporting the armed forces in France.

One of my favourite posters in BT's collection is this unusual view of the UK on its side to show the GPO coastal wireless radio stations chain, essential in 1938 for ship to shore maritime communications. Artist MacDonald (Max) Gill.

44 years ago on 24 February 1975 Led Zeppelin released their iconic album "Physical Graffiti". The cover reminds me of this 1890s marketing by The National Telephone Company, a predecessor. Also this photo of the NTC exchange and offices in New St, Birmingham.

Frank Scudamore, GPO senior manager who oversaw the nationalistaion of the electric telegraph network in the UK in 1870. What he lacked on top was more than compensated by his splendid whiskers.
