It's mainly the lower part of their bodies that looked too similar. For example, with Flame Mammoth, the old legs would look good on any other maverick, but you know the redesign's legs would likely belong to an elephant

I love what they did with the redesigns for boss reploids in Maverick Hunter X. They were already good, but I they leaned more towards the animal's traits and proportions than the basic humanoid reploid build, which makes each of them more unique
