I think Dark Souls had some of that energy in Anor Londo, perhaps? But Amano's work was on a whole nother level. I have his artbook and it's so gorgeous and strange.
It really is a shame that due to technical limitations, and then just by virtue of its legacy, Final Fantasy was never able to realize the ethereal, haute couture quality Yoshitaka Amano envisioned in his original concept art. I'd have loved to have played in this world.
