Some of the stories were beyond the scope of the village. Like how corrupt taxes can halt construction. Or bad governance can lead to floods and revolution.

Some of the stories we wanted to tell we personal ones, like births, marriages and funerals. Milestones of life.

The dragon barrel in that festival became a bit of an in-joke and Peku made it into its own flying monster.

In the vein of that storytelling, we turned the disasters of the past into warnings for future generations, like this dragon assault turned into a festival years later.

The buildings themselves inspired by real buildings. The main tavern is inspired by The George and the Dragon in Seaton, Rutland. Here they are side by side.

We also wanted to focus in on the lives of certain individuals: a shepherd whose flock is ravaged by a demon dog and has to sell his barn. Even today the cultural memories of wolves are reflected in folk tales of demon dogs.

Another aspect was changing birds through the different variations, numbers dwindling as time progressed. Natural spaces were replaced by buildings and farm life, scragly road edges straighten, nests in dead trees are tidied away.

Beyond that was the evolution of the village through the decades and centuries. We made a village map to show how the village as whole was evolving along with the tavern the battlemap focused on. Roads appear, trees are cut down, families grow and on and on.

The basic level of passing time is the changing of the seasons. Farming communities often have their own sense of time in keeping with the blooming and wilting of local plants and the migrations of certain birds. Standardized time is just for productivity and industry.

Battlemap storytelling design thread???

It’s been a month or two since we made them but I want to talk about our 3 part Ages of the Vale series. Despite being basically a tavern (the most generic battlemap there is) this series was our most complex to date.
