'The Mother' painted by Sir John Lavery. This portrait began life in 1909, as a profile study of Lavery’s friend and model Mary Auras, and ended as a study of motherhood in 1924, showing his daughter Eileen with her child. Happy Mother's Day to all mothers.

This years Irish Georgian Society Christmas Card features the chimneypiece from Bowen's Court, Co. Cork. Recently donated to the IGS for installation in the City Assembly House, Dublin. Would it not be more appropriate for it to return to County Cork after all these years?

See what the Regency/Bonnington Hotel, Dublin looked like in the late 1800's when it was known as Broomhill. A collection of photos showing it as it once was, are coming up for sale at Chorley Auctioneers, Gloucestershire. Thanks to my Facebook friend Enda Sherlock who spotted it

98 years ago today, an unforgettable fire occurred at Moydrum Castle in Co. Westmeath. On July 3, 1921 at 3.30 am, armed men surrounded the building, ordered the occupants out & set the building ablaze. The ruin featured on the 1984, U2 album cover 'The Unforgettable Fire'

Interesting views of the architectural evolution of Emo Court, Co. Laois. Designed by James Gandon in 1790 for John Dawson, the 1st Earl of Portarlington who died in 1798 and it took another 200 years and many architects before Emo Court became the grand house that it is today.

Lady Alice Evelyn Mahon painted by Sir John Lavery in 1932 which is on display in Westport House, in Co. Mayo. Lady Alice was born in March 1877, the daughter of the 5th Marquess of Sligo, Lord Henry Ulick Browne. Lady Alice married John Fitzgerald Mahon 1898 & lived until 1970.

The main staircase in Westport House, Co. Mayo, made by Italian workmen for George (3rd Marquess of Sligo) in 1858 beholds the mythological Angel of Welcome centrepiece, where family tradition was to shake the angel’s hand upon returning from trips or visiting.

Then & Now: Castle Bernard, Bandon, Co. Cork. In 1815, the 1st Earl of Bandon gave the house a Gothic makeover. The castle was destroyed by fire in 1921 & has remained a ruin since. You can read about this building in my first book ' Irish Country Houses - A Chronicle of Change'
