Davy created a demonstration of a miniature volcano in one lecture, as reported by Faraday in his lecture notes for Friday 10th April 1812.

A series of beautiful sketches record Davy’s landing at Waterford at the beginning of one of his Irish tours in Notebook 15I.

This view of the lovely mountains around Waterford and Tipperary also has a rather nice reference to one of Davy’s other passions in life – fishing🐟

Davy’s experiments demonstrated that the yellow-green gas isolated by Carl Wilhelm Scheele in 1774 & known as oxymuriatic gas was not a compound but an element, which Davy named chlorine from the Greek ‘chloros’ (meaning greenish-yellow or pale green).

Potassium has the chemical symbol K, & compounds of the element are used in the glass, soap, and pharmaceutical industries. Potassium is also required for plant growth, and is used in garden fertilisers in the form of potash.
