@cuppa_coffee Haydn at the moment (of course). This guy is a great Haydn player.

I'm starting with the recordings from the complete Arnold symphony cycles by Vernon Handley, Andrew Penny and Richard Hickox. If Handley is as good as he's been in Symphonies 1-4 he will be my favourite cycle of the three.

#MalcolmArnoldOdyssey #NowListening to two of the four commercial recordings of Arnold's powerful Symphony No. 3: Vernon Handley & @liverpoolphil (the orchestra that commissioned and premiered it) followed by the composer with @LPOrchestra (in which he once played trumpet).

Wilson and @SinfoniaOfLondn give us Ravel's original version with two side drums spread across the stereo spectrum and castanets and triangle near the end. I also listened to over twenty recordings of the regular score. Boulez and Cluytens make a terrific trio along with Wilson.

The same goes for Valses nobles et sentimentales. Ravel's homage to Schubert also began as a piano suite before becoming a ballet. No one matches Cluytens for leisurely, affectionate elegance. I'm still savouring the French bassoon's nutty flavour days after listening.

The horn vibrato on the classic Cluytens recording is just one part of a distinctively French orchestral sound all but gone today. With his Francophone band Dutoit won a @GramophoneMag award for engineering. He perfectly balances beauty with care for the ballet's narrative flow.

As well as the wondrous Wilson any of these five might be the one to enchant you. This pair run the gamut of orchestral sound from the superhuman richness and radiance of Boulez's @BerlinPhil to tangy transparancy and tenderness from Roth & @LesSiecles on period instruments.
