This Frazetta piece (dated 1986, titled "Torment") is a SPOT-ON representation of the Tree of Pain from Hyperion, despite predating it.

'Bout halfway through The Fall of Hyperion, and it's getting heavy.
Of all the Sci-Fi and fantasy I've read over the past couple years, I don't think I've read any with characters that have suffered this much.
