Food unites people, creates relationships which is the hidden message of ONE PIECE. When you look at it luffy and sanji are the ones who have the most interactions with everyone :

🌊Luffy for obvious reasons
🌊Sanji for his role as a chef

Some strong similarities that allow them to perfectly understand each others. In WCI, luffy immediately knew that sanji's words were fake and that he was hurting himself something nami couldn't see :

🌊When sanji declared his real intentions luffy said :

"That's how you are"

But what sets luffy and sanji apart from the other members of the crew is their relationships with their "mentors" :

🌊Both Shanks and Zeff sacrificed a piece of themselves to save two little boys they believed in. Zeff has decided to pass his dream on to Sanji

ALL BLUE / THE ONE PIECE

🌊Both being the only ones in the crew wanting to find something that maybe doesn't even exist. Dreams sanji refered as "crazy dreams"

When a member joins the crew, the whole crew is present. Except when Sanji joined the crew (I don't count zoro in this because he's the first mate)

🌊It is clear as day that Oda wanted to give Luffy and Sanji a special relationship from the start

Their destinies are connected

Funnily enough, it is during onigashima that luffy revealed something extremely similar to what sanji said in the baratie :

🌊Create a world when people are no longer starving

Sanji being the cook sets him up as the most important character in one piece besides luffy

One loves women the other loves food. Yet it is just the opposite. Despite not being linked by a clear bond that can be seen from the outside, both are deeply connected by :

🌊Their personalities
🌊The way they behave
🌊Their backstories

and most importantly their dreams
