Thread on values! Have you ever had to rely on tweaking levels in Photoshop in order to get your painting to have enough contrast? Here’s how to confidently control values from the very beginning!
Tip about edges in painting! Edges are closely related to value. Notice here how the soft edge of the shadow on the sphere is simply a slow gradient of value. This slow change of value tells us that the sphere is round, but it also appears as an abstract shape with a soft edge.
Color tip! Keep in mind what colors are intense at what values. Example: red is intense at a middle value, and yellow is intense at a light value, so I knew red in the light and the yellow in the shadow could be part of the same value group. This helps to plan values structures!
By knowing the material, the environment, and 3D structure of what we are drawing, we can make a good guess as to the colors. All color is due to reflection. Imagine what each plane “sees.” When a surface is no longer “seeing” the light source, it turns into shadow.
By working every day, this narrative can take us places that we wouldn't have expected. By following this thread sincerely and without judgment, our work can take on a really interesting and personal quality.
One aspect of drawing is depicting form in space, which leads to the study of perspective, planar structure, and others, but with the new definition we can always relate these back to the higher concepts of design, and when we study it keeps it in the service of artistic ideas.
6. Cast shadows (when light is blocked by an object) from a small light source are hard, and gradually get softer as the distance from the shadow caster increases.
