9-year-old Rutsubo is holding a grudge against her estranged father, believing he left her mother who died in childbirth. She agrees to spend a summer with him & slowly, her attitude is starting to change 👨‍👧💕

Another perfect summer read: Ishii Asuka’s debut Hisakata no Oto about a young teacher who returns to Aoshima, a small island full of mysterious natural wonders & inhabitants; serialized in Kodansha’s good! Afternoon, with 1 vol. out and the 2nd (& final) to follow on July 6th 🌊

The new cover edition for Sui’iki by Urushibara Yuki of Mushishi fame has a similar cover design concept to Nishi Keiko’s Otoko no Isshō. A perfect summer read with its focus on water, especially for environmentally conscious readers & Mushishi fans. So basically, for everyone 🌏

Shimada Masahiko, one of the most relevant Japanese writers of the past 3+ decades, has collaborated with josei mangaka Higashimura Akiko for his latest project, a novel for young adults called Zetsubō Kyarameru (Kawade Shobo). Cover + 8-page color 'warm up' comic by Higashimura!

The print apocalypse is upon us: Gentosha's monthly magazine Birz is folding after its August issue, out June 30. Its catchphrase: "Don't be like a boring grown-up." Don't laugh, this is serious. Sugisaki Yukiru, Hoshino Lily, Urino Kiko, Ikuemi Ryō have/had series running in it.

It's marketed as a love story between a mid-30s career woman stranded in the countryside & an older professor. But it’s also a story of female empowerment & defending your political&economic ideas against male scepticism. A masterpiece!! With an amazing cover design concept ⬇️

I really like Ikuemi's series with a focus on family like Watashi ga itemo inakutemo (also available in French, thanks !) and especially Kano hito ya tsuki. The characters in it are so relatable. And I find the depiction of family dynamics in manga always interesting 🏠
