Neoscona acab.
This orbweaver, unusually, has a bite that can cause prolonged diarrhea in humans. Despite a few high-profile cases last year, its venom is NOT unusually potent against LEOS; it's a combination of poor cop hygiene and machismo that produces the worst reactions.
Kyrgocosa lexipedalus, the fuzzy-dice wolf spider.
Named for the oddly squarish pedipalps that the male of this Costa Rican species waves while courting, these pinkish-gray spiders have naturalized to Las Vegas and it's considered good luck to see one run across the craps table.
Part 3: My backyard is largely spider-free, due to the domesticated dinosaurs I keep out there. However, I did find a big, glossy Steatoda grossa (false widow) and the exuvium and some egg sacs of what was probably a hacklemesh weaver (Amaurobiidae) judging by the cobwebs.
@ouroborous3 MANY HAVE TRIED BUT NO ONE WILL EVER STOP ME FROM DRAWING UNICORNS
BONUS 9: Some things that made me laugh while searching "arachnophobia" on stock photo websites.
Threat Level Yellow: This Toy Spider Is Ruining My Life
BONUS #7
What if I drew some horses the way a lot of spider tattoos seem to turn out? Some things, once seen, cannot be unseen.
36. Tapinillus lynx spiders.
Most lynx spiders are wandering hunters but this Costa Rican genus builds webs for prey capture: cool! BUT THERE'S MORE! At least one species is truly social, living in groups of dozens of adults and juveniles and cooperatively feeding and nesting.
BONUS #2:
I have already mentioned the Cyclosa trashline orb weavers, who arrange debris in their webs, but check out these specialist Cyclosa species in the Philippines and in Peru, which appear to 1) create a decoy spider 2) wiggle it when predators approach.
18. Nephila clavipes, or uh, whatever they're called now. The golden silk spiders.
Many related species are golden in coloration but it's their gold-tinted silk that sets them apart from other orb-weavers. There's a tapestry made from the silk of live spiders from Madagascar.
