September 1st is the start of meteorological autumn, my favourite season, and brings warm memories of a dark piece I wrote about an otter being chosen for the gorgeous Autumn anthology edited by @M_Z_Harrison. It marked the beginning of a new life chapter. https://t.co/bKqB2qyAxM
Whilst I enjoy seeing a conventional swallowtail species as much as the next biologist, I particularly enjoy their Parnassius relatives, the apollos. These Clouded Apollo were busy making more apollos when we found them yesterday - our last butterflies of the @Greenwings tour.
Alpine birding today in north Greece on the tour I’m leading here for @Greenwings - views of Ortolan Bunting, Rock Thrush and Alpine Chough badly distracted by swathes of crocuses flowering across the mountain meadows.
There's a new, searchable, database of historic watercolour paintings - The Watercolour World - and it's tremendous. This Lady's Slipper #Orchid dates to c.1600, by John White, from British Museum. From before they'd been collected to brink of extinction. https://t.co/PGVjtYs3N0
