As a remain voter not sure Trafalgar anniversary is p.c. but 16 British ships (see lamp-posts along The Mall) had classical names-Neptune, Agamemnon, Ajax, Orion, Minotaur, Spartiate, Mars, Bellerophon, Colossus, Achille, Polyphemus, Euryalus, Naiad, Phoebe, Sirius, Britannia)

"When the model-turned-business-woman went on holiday with the mayor" sounds like a sub-plot in Petronius' Satyrika tbh. https://t.co/R1hg4GTz0U

I'm excited to be kicking off my free A-Level Greek course for adult learners today at King's College London. Over the next twenty months we're reading Plato's Phaedo and Euripides' Medea, two towering landmarks of world literature. Pure joy.

For Native Americans, 9/11 means a different sad anniversary for Manhattan. It was September 11th 1609 when Henry Hudson, risen from humble cabin boy to controversial captain, "discovered" their island home.

For my favourite papyrus: a North African Greek actor's rehearsal script for the bereaved Admetus' role in Euripides' Alcestis; extra-big letters for reading off while gesticulating: 'I'll never touch the lyre again, nor lift my heart in song to the Libyan pipe"

Software advice please!! My pal Paul Cartledge says & and I need maps to show where the 1,000+ places in Britain+Ireland we mention in A People's History of Classics actually are. We've a list of the places: how do I mark them on maps other than with paper and a biro?

We've done it! The last pic/permission is in for A People's History of Classics! Abraham Cann, 'The Devon Hercules', one of the last great champions of the brutal lost art of 'Devon Rules' Shin-Kicking, portrayed here with The Farnese Hercules in 1846. https://t.co/kRMlJXmMWF

It's the anniversary of the Acts of Union 1800. These created the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Their repercussions may still derail Brexit/the EU. The contested symbol of St Patrick's red saltire was added to the Union Jack, where it remains intact, despite 1922.

Blog on two classicists who committed murder in England (it must be either the heat or the Tory leadership contest that has reminded me of them) https://t.co/bevhcJM9DN
