Claude never tells anyone where he goes off to, to think and be alone. Dimitri goes looking for him one day and finds him as he gazes upon his father. He never disturbs him but be always keeps guard.

And the last part. Edelgard locks Claude just before she starts war on the church. She left a reminder that she'll be coming back. He tries to reason with her but she can't turn back. During the five years she has Hubert check up on him periodically and he gives him reports.

I like to think the dynamic between them is really complicated.
