I've praised Guilty Gear Strive's animation multiple times. However, looking back at Xrd, it is all too easy to see what has been lost - in visual terms - between the games.
So here's a mostly non-visual thread about the importance of visual direction.⬇️
Yamashita's idiosyncratic direction being reduced to "MAPPA GOAT" is hardly surprising, but it is interesting how the recent "outsourcing = bad" discourse begets a "good = in house" mindset. This is how popular oversimplifications produce new prejudices and misconceptions.
“When Marnie was There is the better version of Your Name.”
Actually, there is a serious point to be made about the relation between these films and the multifariousness of cinema. Such encounters remind us that there are many different works, each with its distinct appeal.
Thinking about sakuga epistemology, the material construction of animation and Thomas LaMarre's questionable claim that "Hayao Miyazaki hates movement into depth".
A thread.
Ironically, but perhaps not coincidentally, Takahata's subsequent pursuit of an unvarnished image of reality would only be completed in the anti-Pippi that is Anne.

Astonishing, painterly CG work by Chinese studio 两点 足 动.
