Some years ago I was invited to create an art piece for an exhibition in the Mediamatic Institute (Amsterdam).

I wanted to show what a digital painting looked like so I kept the painting quite sketchy and printed it at a large scale and made the PS layers physical.

A Pictish minotaur for Ryse:Son of Rome. The idea was that, like in the 13th warrior, in the imagination of the Roman soldier the Picts appear as actual monsters, but when they're killed you realize they're humans in suits with skulls on their heads.

It's so interesting to look at this work now after so long, without any of the anxieties I had about them at the time. I'm surprised how clearly I remember all of them too. My big issue was that I could do a decent speedpaint but I often didn't know how to finish them.

Oh, shit. I just managed to get into the hard drive of my first PC (which didn't boot up anymore) through an adapter and gained access to my first digital paintings. Here are the four oldest sketches, from 2006. It feels surreal to see this work again after 15 years.
