Production trick: since we have literrally hundreds of illustrations to create for cards, we decided during preproduction to work from a bank of resuable assets. Building, props and even patterns for walls and floors.
The second important point is shadow tinting. Usually 3D shadows are just a darker version of the diffuse with a tinted ambient color added on top. We want full control over our shadows and not be bothered by the effect of the diffuse per object. One shadow color, one mood.
With this effect we can guarantee that cards will always be readable. We can also control globally or per object how powerfull this self illumination effect is and animate it. Central or focused cards can be full on and appear untouched by lights & shadows during choices.
Beware, if you do not unplug your @Klapstok™ before leaving the office, you might find it stuck in a loop the next Morning. Trying an infinite number of color compositions for one card.
These were kind of the two "finalists". At first, Anaïs wasn't as comfortable as @Klapstok for the Disney way. But when you see her boards of character concepts now... it's hard to tell. We weighed this choice carefully. It is not exactly forgiving, if not executed well enough.
Before settling down for a traditional "Disney" style, which is actually the comfort zone of @klapstok, we tried many style with Anaïs for the characters. Here's just a few of them!
A small selection of my personal favorites of the last Inktobers by @Klapstok and Anaïs. Themes : Injured, Coat, Catch & Misfit. These are part of the many many character studies we're doing for the denizens of Foretales.
