What's not quite obvious in chibi form are her tattoos. Lore-wise, this particular design is based on what someone may do to fine-tune their magicka use. Kai is a magplar (magic-leaning Templar for my non-ESO/MMO followers), so she did this at some point in her life...

Minus the chibi simplification parts, this is how I imagine Kai's outfit to look. Outfit customization is amazing on ESO, but it does have limits (as you can see, she's "technically" wearing two jackets based on the chest piece and pants piece). I really wanted something longer
