Cy Twombly loved the hedonistic Mediterranean life and painted it. But, by including a series of enigmatic, variously discernable words, including “WINE,” “CONCERNS,” and “weeps,” Twombly moves beyond pure abstraction to embrace the communicative possibilities of poetic allusion.
