One of the interesting things about working with artworks from 1881 is that the possibilities are limited by what I know, rather than what someone from 1881 knew. The new artworks really reveal my relationship with the past…

Magazine circulation shows interesting things about Victorian reading. Judy was read by the lower middle class – urban working people who may have had a servant. Whoever bought the magazine passed it on, creating a large network of hidden readers. #DbDpDf

Roedd Judy yn cael ei ddarllen gan y dosbarth canol isel – sy’n golygu pobl a fyddai’n gweithio yn y dref ac o bosib gyda morwyn. Mi wnaeth pwy bynnag a brynodd y cylchgrawn ei basio ymlaen gan greu rhwydwaith fawr o ddarllenwyr cuddiedig. #DbDpDf

Cafodd yr holl gartwnau gwreiddiol eu cyhoeddi’n wythnosol rhwng 1870-80. Mae’n bosib y byddai William Gladstone wedi bod yn un o’r darllenwyr hyn – mae copi o’r casgliad i’w gael yn ei lyfrgell ym Mhenarlâg #DbDpDf
The original cartoons were all published weekly between 1870-80, then published as a collection in 1881, aimed at readers of Judy magazine who might want to laugh again. One reader might have been William Gladstone – a copy of the collection is in his library in Hawarden. #DbDpDf
