Bastion's purpose was to provide Branson with a tunic in the intro. I thought it'd be funny if he returned later in the game, wearing nothing but a "bankruptcy barrel" & possibly would've asked for a rematch (only to lose again) - he never returns

Here's a look at a concept sprite of what Branson would've looked like pre-"Beard Blade" in all of his farmer glory. We never ended up having a reason to portray him like this in-game since we're introduced to him in his pajamas. I think these are from 2017

When was the last time you went up in your attic? Do you know for SURE there isn't a Smuglin up there?

While it is mentioned a few times in the game that Branson is a farmer, we never see him depicted as such and is only playable in pajamas (briefly) and Bastion's tunic. Dev @FighterJow made this drawing for Beard Blade's website that shows Branson in his normal farming attire.
