11. A whole bunch of abandoned locations! Abandoned castles, abandoned theme parks ... all the spooky places!!
10. Oh boy. I would ... maybe head to Japan as that's where I want to visit next. Somewhere with a hot spring and lots of good food with friends!
we ended we scenes of how barovia had changed for the better, and some cases the worse, with their time there. @StrahdVonZ was defeated, the mists receded and for the first time in a while, the sun rose over the mountains. they had a lot of darkness to overcome, but they did.
(oops tweeted out of order). leon used the sunsword and tactics to make his mentor proud. van richten + mordekainen provided support outside the castle against a horde of undead. ezmerelda started a new BH order to make sure that if strahd came back, barovia would be ready.
iric also carried the soul of sergei with him. i always thought it was a bit strange that tatyana and strahd remain in barovia ... but sergei is never really mentioned beyond a few cameos. luke didn't know this at all, but somehow played into the role perfectly!
leon. sweet, sweet leon. a lycan blood hunter in search of his mentor, rudolph van richten. i rewrote rudolph as a blood hunter for this story, and leon was very much tied to the story of the dark powers within barovia and beyond. he was cursed no less than 3 times.
carrow was a drow monk, obssessed with death that wanted to find the mythic amber temple. by the end she'd turned undead, owned a giant flying skull and found her long lost twin brother. i knew the player, @djfox311 would love all the gross gore, and i gave it to her!
it was rocky when we started i wont lie. i was still a babby dm, i didnt quite know how to find my footing in a pre-written module. i think i focused too much on how cool barovia was and not enough on how cool the players were! that's my big advice i guess- focus on ur PCs.
but that's enough of lofty thoughts! down to specifics. our barovia had a few special things. there wasn't a lot of initial thought to a lady strahd other than "vampire lady pretty mm yes" but it was interesting seeing how perspective of story tone changed with her.
i think that's because at least in my own life i deal with feeling helpless to the many depressing problems in my own mind and world. i wanted to make a place where small acts of kindness add up to a monstrous wave of hope. the effort to be kind is rewarded in my barovia.
